Swiss Castles Day 2022

Food

What a cheese!

To mark the 7th Swiss Castles Day, on Sunday 2 October, the Castle of Gruyères is putting the spotlight on a cheese known far beyond the city.

Now awarded the PDO label, Gruyère cheese has been a source of prosperity and renown in the region since the late Middle Ages. The history of this cheese, mentioned in chronicles as early as the 12th century, goes hand in hand with that of the Counts of Gruyère and then the Bailiffs of Fribourg, who increased cheese production and exports to foreign markets.

On Swiss Castle Day, the theme of which is food, the Castle of Gruyères invites the public to go behind the scenes of the making of one of Switzerland's most famous products. In the former residence of the count, an artisan cheesemaker will be on hand to explain how Gruyère cheese is made and reveal the secrets of a cheese that was born on the castle's doorstep.

The public can also enjoy guided tours during the afternoon, in French (2 pm and 4 pm) and German (3 pm).
