Like a mountaineer climbing a steep mountain, Alois Lichtsteiner is committed to printmaking. Resolutely determined to explore new paths, the artist uses contemporary materials and technologies, combining them with ancestral methods to open up hitherto unknown horizons.

Step by step, the artist treads a fine line between figuration and abstraction, graphic art and painting, to create impressive mountain landscapes printed on delicate Japanese paper. The exhibition Tosa Shoji focuses on Lichtsteiner's printmaking activities and presents works on paper created over the course of a decade for the first time in the historic rooms of Gruyères Castle.
