Gruyères Castle opens its doors to the Alt.+1000 photography festival and presents the work of Edgar Martins. Investing the former count's residence, the English artist showcases works that challenge the notion of territory, its representations and its avatars.

Through finely elaborated images, the photographer immerses us into intriguing territories. These spaces are those of the cities and suburbs frantically erected by the American promoters, but whose development was abruptly stopped by the subprime crisis. These are also the training grounds of the British special forces in which he seizes abstract and hypnotic compositions.

Edgard Martins

Born in Portugal in 1977, Edgar Martins grew up in Macau before moving to the UK, where he now lives and works. After beginning his studies in philosophy, he turned to photography and continued his training in this discipline at Berkshire College of Art & Design in Reading and then at the Royal College of Arts in London, where he obtained a Master's degree in Photography and Fine Art.
Since 2001, his work has been shown in prestigious places such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the National Media Museum in Bradford, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Fondation Carmignac. In 2010, the Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian held its first retrospective of his work in Paris, and the following year Macao invited him to present his work in its national pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale.
