Anne-Julie Raccoursier
Great Hall
Swiss artist Anne-Julie Raccoursier takes over Gruyères Castle and mischievously transforms it into a theatre of power.
The exhibition’s title, Great Hall, is a reference to the grandest room in the castle: in essence, the seat of authority and a place for display, but also for socialising and entertainment. Through her videos, photographs and installations, the artist documents our everyday existence and our rituals, creating the backdrop for a timeless social comedy.
Veering between reality and fiction, the works of Anne-Julie Raccoursier capture images that, at first sight, might seem banal. But by shifting points of view, reframing those images and giving them rhythm, she exposes our society’s shams and contradictions.

Anne-Julie Raccoursier
Born in Lausanne in 1975, Anne-Julie Raccoursier trained at the Ecole Supérieure d'Art Visuel of Geneva before moving on to the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, where she graduated in 2003 with a Master of Fine Arts in Critical Studies.
The artist's favorite themes are identity, entertainment culture and its rituals, and the representation of power. Highlighting the shifts in meaning in situations or images that may seem innocuous, her works reveal the surprising dissonances and paradoxes of our society. Situated at the intersection between capturing reality and spectacular staging, her work has been presented in exhibitions both in Switzerland and abroad.
