Christmas in Appenzell
Tradition from Appenzell Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden
Gruyères Castle opens its doors to Appenzell's Christmas traditions. From All Saints' Day to New Year's Eve, the exhibition reveals the specific Catholic characteristics of the Inner Rhodes and the Protestant ones of the Outer Rhodes.
A true feast for the senses, Christmas in Appenzell Innerrhoden begins on November 1 with the creation of elaborately decorated gingerbread by real artists. On the December 24th, these Chlausebickli adorn the Christmas pyramid that takes pride of place in the center of Appenzell homes. For the inhabitants of Ausserrhoden, the Christmas season comes to an end on New Year's Eve, celebrated twice a year. At dawn on December 31 and January 13, the men don their Silvesterklaüse costumes. While the "ugly" hide their faces behind terrifying masks fashioned from bones and branches, the "beautiful" wear monumental, decorated hats and go from farm to farm wishing a happy new year.
