Michael Rampa’s paintings are like recollections. Crystal-clear in places, they fade and vanish, leaving behind blank spots invested with just as much meaning as the parts we can still make out. Starting with a motif or an evocation from history, the artist builds up his paintings in layers, progressively adding areas of colour, spaces set aside, and figures that often reference his own memory or other works. In images that border on the abstract, Michael Rampa thus creates a dreamlike world of mysteries waiting to be deciphered.
Born in Château d’Oex, he travelled regularly around the Gruyères region armed with his sketchbook before journeying to Italy and the UK to pursue his self-education. In this, his first solo museum exhibition he retraces his steps and presents his latest works at Gruyères Castle.

Michael Rampa
Born in Château-d'Œx in 1977, Michael Rampa soon took up drawing and painting. He discovered painting and the old masters on trips to Italy and the UK, and taught himself by observing and experimenting with different techniques. A virtuoso in watercolour, which he paints on a variety of media, he has made a name for himself in particular with his series of jungles/forests in which mysterious characters are depicted.
